What Is Gynecomastia?

Some men, affected by hormones, genetics, and other factors, develop an excess of fat and tissue in the pectoral area. This condition is known as gynecomastia, or "male breasts". Gynecomastia can severely affect a man's self-esteem and self-perception — especially because the excess tissue often develops during adolescence.

Gynecomastia appears in both overweight and physically fit patients. It cannot usually be addressed through diet and exercise; in fact, attempts to reduce the appearance of the chest by developing the pectoralis muscle may, in fact, exacerbate the problem.

Dr. Sadeghi can remove the excess tissue, applying liposuction if needed, to reduce the appearance of male breasts and ameliorate the condition of gynecomastia.

The Gynecomastia Procedure

During this simple procedure, Dr. Sadeghi will make one or more incisions in the chest to remove excess fat and tissue. Closing sutures are made under the skin, where they dissolve over time.

Risks of the Gynecomastia Procedure

This procedure has an extremely low rate of complications, and involves the standard surgical risks of anesthesia, scarring, and infection. However, virtually all patients who undergo gynecomastia surgery with Dr. Sadeghi are enthusiastic about their results. View a before and after photo gallery.

Recovering From Your Gynecomastia Procedure

Most men will experience pain and soreness for about two to three days following their surgery. Dr. Sadeghi will prescribe oral pain medication to make you more comfortable.

Keep in mind that immediately following the procedure, your results will not be visible due to swelling and/or bruising. Applying cooling packs for the first 48 hours after surgery, keeping hydrated, and avoiding salt intake, will help reduce swelling.

You can resume normal activities as soon as you feel able. After three weeks, you may begin working out again. Please note that you may not see your final results for up to six months.
