Who Can Get Otoplasty?

Men and women who have endured hurtful teasing about the size, shape, or position of their ears may seek corrective otoplasty. The procedure is highly customized, depending on the shape of the ear and the desired correction.

Most patients with ears that protrude past 3mm wish to see the ears lying flatter against the head, which otoplasty can accomplish.

The Otoplasty Procedure

Otoplasty is a safe and simple procedure that can even be performed on children, since the size of the pinna (outer ear cartilage) reaches adult size when kids are around five or six years old.

When performing otoplasty on adults, Dr. Sadeghi will first numb the area surrounding the ear using a local anesthetic, and patients will receive a sedative. An incision behind the ear ensures that any scar from repositioning the ear stays hidden.

Next, Dr. Sadeghi will reshape the ear cartilage using a combination of strategic sutures, scoring, and limited tissue removal as needed. The ear is then repositioned and sutured in place, fixing the problem of excess projection and achieving symmetry with the patient's other side.

Risks of the Otoplasty Procedure

Otoplasty is one of the safest cosmetic surgery procedures available, and can have a hugely positive effect on self-esteem in both adults and children.

Recovering From Your Otoplasty

After your surgery, you'll have a large pressure dressing on your ears to prevent swelling and fluid buildup. In two to three days, Dr. Sadeghi's staff will remove the dressing—this is when you can wash your hair, if you'd like.

You'll need to be very careful when washing or styling your hair as your sutures heal over the following two to three weeks. Bruising and swelling normally disappear within the first week. View a before-and-after gallery of satisfied otoplasty patients.
